Sciatica

Sciatica: pain down the leg starts higher up

Sciatica is pain, tingling or numbness that travels from the lower back or buttock down the back of the leg, along the path of the sciatic nerve. It is a symptom, not a diagnosis: the cause is usually irritation of the nerve roots in the lower spine or tension around the pelvis. Chiropractic care assesses exactly where that irritation is coming from and works to restore movement and reduce pressure on the nerve.

What sciatica feels like

  • Sharp, burning or electric pain from the buttock down the leg, usually one side
  • Tingling or numbness in the calf or foot
  • Worse with sitting, coughing or bending forward
  • Low-back pain that started first, or no back pain at all
  • During pregnancy, as the pelvis and ligaments change

Where it comes from

The sciatic nerve is formed by nerve roots that leave the spine in the lower back and pass through the pelvis. Anything that irritates those roots, a disc under pressure, segments that have lost movement, a twisted pelvis, tight muscles in the buttock, can produce symptoms all the way down the leg.

Our exam looks at the movement of each lumbar segment and the pelvis, at posture, and at how the nervous system is responding. Where imaging or a medical opinion is needed, we say so and refer you.

How we approach it

Gentle, specific adjustments to the lower spine and pelvis to restore movement and reduce pressure on the nerve, adapted to what your body tolerates that day. Alongside, practical guidance on sitting, sleeping and moving so you stop re-irritating the nerve between visits. Progress checks measure the change rather than guessing.

We do not diagnose or treat diseases. We assess the spine and nervous system, adjust where we find restriction, and refer you to the right specialist whenever something needs another set of eyes.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can chiropractic help sciatica?

Many people with sciatica improve with chiropractic care aimed at the lower spine and pelvis. We assess where the irritation comes from first; if we suspect something that needs imaging or a medical specialist, we refer you.

Is it safe to adjust the lower back when I have sciatica?

Adjustments are adapted to your case and to what you can tolerate that day. Low-force and instrument techniques are available when the area is very sensitive.

Sciatica during pregnancy: can you help?

Yes. Pelvic balance is central to prenatal care, and we use pregnancy tables and gentle techniques. See our prenatal page.

How long does it take?

Acute cases often change quickly; long-standing ones take longer. You get a specific plan at your Report of Findings.
